A clogged toilet in your commercial building can cause visitors to have a negative impression of your business. Your commercial facilities are a huge part of customer service and having a clean, tidy, and sanitized bathroom for your guests and customers is essential to repeat business.

Unfortunately, clogged toilets are probably one of the most common commercial plumbing concerns and happen fairly often. Typically, a clogged toilet happens due to something being flushed down the toilet that shouldn’t have been. For instance, baby wipes, make-up cleansing towlettes, sanitary napkins, diapers, and paper towels. Sometimes, just an overwhelming amount of toilet paper can cause a clogged toilet.

Addressing a commercial toilet clog is much like addressing one in your home, a plunger is the first line of defense. However, you want to make sure that the plunger you have is rated for commercial use and has the right kind of bulb for your commercial toilets.

Here are some steps that you can take to remove a clog in your commercial toilet:

  • Turn off the water valve on the effected toilet. This prevents water from continuing to back-up into the bowl of the toilet and overflowing onto the floor. A toilet that has overflowed onto the floor of your commercial business could require you shutting down the bathroom completely for thorough cleaning and sanitizing, which will cost you money and customers.
  • If there is not any water in the toilet bowl, use a bucket and add some. Do not fill the toilet bowl completely, just enough to cover the bulb of the plunger.
  • Place the bulb of the plunger over the drain inside of the toilet bowl so that it is securely covering the entire drain. Push the handle of the plunger down forcefully and then pull it up forcefully (but not enough to remove the bulb from the drain). Repeat this process several times.
  • When you see the water that is in the bowl begin to drain, you have likely dislodged the clog. Add another bucket of water to be sure, and then turn the shut-off valve back on.
  • Finally, flush the toilet and confirm that it is flushing properly and without delay.

While a clogged toilet might seem like a minor problem compare to all of the other hundreds of things you have to address each day, it is one that must be addressed immediately. A clogged toilet is unsanitary and will quickly cause your customers and visitors to think twice about returning to your establishment. Follow these simple steps for removing a toilet clog from your commercial plumbing.
