Maintenance of your commercial business can be a round the clog job. Not the least of which is maintaining your commercial plumbing. When a guest or customer comes to your business, having properly working plumbing is essential to making a good impression and having repeat business. A clogged toilet or sink that is backing up can cause foul odors and unsanitary floods that will cause business to come to a halt until the problem is fixed.

As a business owner, you understand how important it is to keep your commercial building in top working order and well maintained at all times. Maintaining your commercial plumbing can be done a little bit every day, and is everyone’s job.

Here are some steps that you and your team can take to keep your commercial plumbing maintained:

  • Clogged toilet. A clogged toilet is the most common plumbing failure in a commercial building. These problems usually originate from a foreign object being flushed down the toilet. Anything from sanitary napkins and diapers to cleaning towlettes and baby wipes will overwhelm a commercial toilet drain and cause a clog. To prevent this, provide your customers with small waste baskets where they can throw these items away. Or, hang a politely worded sign that asks that these items not be flushed down the toilet.
  • Clogged kitchen sink: Commercial kitchen sinks become clogged when too much grease, oil, and fats are rinsed into the drain. Most often, this happens when the hot water from the dishwasher melts the grease, fats, and oils from the dishes and washes it into the drain. While this material is soft and liquid when it goes into the drain, once it begins to cool it solidifies and binds to the inside walls of the pipes. This will quickly lead to a clog in your commercial plumbing system, which will result in a back-up of bacteria laden water.
  • Clogged floor drain: A floor drain in your commercial kitchen or food prep area can be extremely helpful and useful when it comes to sanitizing the area or cleaning up a mess. With a floor drain, you can avoid the need for soaking up any water that is used for cleaning the area. Or, cleaning a spill that has happened. But, if your floor drain gets clogged from hair, debris, dirt, and other solid materials the mess that it can cause is significant. To avoid a floor drain clog, make sure to install a screen and drain cover that will catch the solid materials that are rinsed down the drain.

As with many things, regular maintenance of your commercial plumbing system is the best way to prevent plumbing failures. In addition to regular inspections by a professional commercial plumber, follow these tips for maintaining some of the more commonly failing areas of your commercial plumbing system.
