In your commercial kitchen, hundreds of meals are prepared and served each week. This high volume of food, means a high volume of food by-product and waste that goes into the garbage disposal. While your commercial garbage disposal is designed to handle a high volume of waste, there are times when it just becomes overwhelmed and will develop a clog, or just stops working.

A failure in your garbage disposal can cause a back-up of contaminated water into your sinks, which may require that you shut down your kitchen until the area can be thoroughly cleaned and sanitized. This interruption in production means an interruption in profits.

Here are some steps that you can take to troubleshoot and address your commercial garbage disposal failure:

If the unit stops working:

  • The first step is to locate and push the reset button. This is typically located on the bottom of the unit.
  • If the unit is not making any noise, plug something else into the outlet that the garbage disposal is plugged into to make sure that the issue is not power related.
  • If the reset button does not initiate a power response, but you have verified that the outlet is live and has power coming to it, then your garbage disposal needs to be replaced.

If there is an obstruction:

  • First, unplug the unit and insert the Allen wrench that came with the unit into the space underneath the unit.
  • Move the key back and forth until it becomes loose enough that you can turn it clockwise and counterclockwise with little effort.
  • Rotate the key in a 360 degree circle several times in both directions.
  • Place your hand (make sure the unit is unplugged) into the disposal and remove all of the solid material that you can.
  • Once you have removed all solids, plug the unit back in, turn the hot water on, and run the disposal for about 5 seconds.
  • Turn the unit on an off several times to make sure that all obstructions have been freed.

A failing garbage disposal in your commercial kitchen can cause serious trouble. If your commercial disposal has a clog or has stopped working, follow these simple steps for troubleshooting the problem.
